It sounds a little intimidating at first, but once you try it, you’ll wonder why you waited so long. Before you start, soak your sphagnum moss in water for about 30 minutes, then squeeze out the extra water. You want it damp, not dripping wet. Wet moss is the key ingredient here because it keeps the wound moist so roots can actually grow.

Once your moss is ready, use your knife to make two cuts about an inch apart around the stem, then peel away that ring of bark. This is called girdling, and it stops nutrients from flowing down so the plant puts energy into making roots instead. If you have rooting hormone, dust a little on the exposed area now.

Pack a good handful of damp sphagnum moss around the wound, making it about the size of a baseball. Then wrap the whole thing tightly in clear plastic wrap and seal both ends with twist ties. You want zero air gaps in there.

Now comes the hardest part: waiting! Check on it every week or two. You’re looking for white roots to appear through the clear plastic. For rubber trees and fiddle leaf figs, this usually takes four to eight weeks. Monsteras tend to root a little faster, sometimes in just three to four weeks.

How to Know When to Cut and Care for Your New Plant

When you see a good clump of white roots filling the moss ball, it’s time to cut! Use clean pruning shears to cut just below the rooted section. Don’t rush this step, because you want a solid root system before the new plant has to survive on its own.

Carefully unwrap the plastic, but leave the moss attached to the roots. Trying to pull the moss off can damage those delicate new roots, and that’s the last thing you want after all that waiting. Just plant the whole moss ball directly into a pot with fresh, well-draining potting mix.

For the first few weeks after potting, keep your new plant in bright indirect light and water it regularly. Don’t let it dry out completely while it’s getting established. I like to pop a clear plastic bag loosely over the top for the first week or two to keep humidity up, especially during Florida’s drier winter months.

Once your new plant is settled in, the care for all three of these plants is pretty similar. They all love bright indirect light, and none of them want to sit in soggy soil. I use the finger test for watering: stick your finger about two inches into the soil, and if it feels dry, it’s time to water.

Rubber trees are honestly the toughest of the three. They tolerate lower light and less frequent watering, which makes them great for beginners. Fiddle leaf figs are a little more dramatic and really hate being moved around or getting cold drafts. Monsteras are somewhere in the middle and grow like crazy once they’re happy.

Here in Florida, all three of these plants can actually go outside in summer if you put them in a shaded spot. The humidity and warmth make them absolutely explode with growth. Just watch out for spider mites and scale insects, which love to sneak onto houseplants that spend time outdoors.

Fertilize during the growing season (spring through summer) with a balanced liquid fertilizer about once a month. Skip fertilizing in winter when growth naturally slows down. Your plants will thank you for it!
